Christian, Muslim students perform folk concert this month to ‘create harmony’ between faiths

17222171-mmmainChristian and Muslim students will come together next Wednesday for a public concert designed to promote peace and understanding between the faith groups.

The “Creating Harmony” performance starts at 6:30 p.m. March 18 at St. Mary’s Academy, which is located at 1615 SW 5th Ave.

“The arts transcend our doctrines. Music elevates us, and we can meet there,” said Jan Elfers, public policy director for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon.

High school and fourth grade students fromOregon Episcopal School and Oregon Islamic Academy will perform a variety of folk songs, Elfers said, including Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “One Voice” by The Wailin’ Jennys.

Bringing adults together for the performance is important, Elfers said, but giving children of different faiths an opportunity to work together is what’s critical.
